Deep down, I always knew that I wasn’t meant to take the conventional path through life. Although I followed the traditional trajectory from high school to college and completed a BA in History, I found myself hesitating when deciding on a career after graduation. Knowing a job in firefighting or education would make those around me proud, I came close to settling for a career path that wasn’t for me.

I had graduated $30,000+ in debt and couldn’t even afford my own apartment, sleeping on a friend’s couch instead. The quintessential “American Dream” seemed completely out of reach to me. Then one of my favorite professors I called “Doc” sat me down and asked, “Do you see yourself following a more conventional or exceptional path in life?”

Doc’s one simple question had a profound effect on my perspective on life. That day, I chose to follow the unconventional path of entrepreneurship in lieu of a more traditional—and predictable—career. I also gained clarity on my true talent, working with people. Although I may have disappointed some important individuals when I initially made that decision, I’m proud to say that I’ve found success on my own terms while enjoying a lifestyle that I used to only dream of.
